However, we’ve all been there when we notice that the neighbour’s lawn looks so much greener and finer than our own. What might be the reason for this? Well there are several mowing mistakes that people are unaware of and unconsciously doing. Here are the most common mowing mistakes to avoid:
#1: You’re cutting the grass too short
During the summer, when the grass is growing fast and you’re preparing for your summer holiday, it might make perfect logical sense to cut the grass shorter than usual.
However, cutting grass stimulates it to grow. Strangely, moss is more likely to grow in grass that is short too. When you’re planning to go on holiday, stick with your regular cutting pattern. Then when you return, cut it more frequently, lowering the blades each time until you get back to your preferred length.
Don’t cut more than one third of the height each time you cut.
#2: You’re cutting with blunt blades
Shaving with a razor that is not sharp doesn’t work. Just as with your kitchen knives, your blades need sharpening once in a while. If they aren’t sharp your grass is more likely to get ripped and torn out of the turf, rather than be nicely shorn and neat.
#3: You don’t clean your mower
Although you may have purchased the top of the range lawn mower, you need to take care of it. Each time you use it, it will get covered in cuttings, in particular if there is some dampness on the ground and in the grass.
We recommend that you give your mower a thorough cleanse twice a year. After you’ve used it, wait for it to cool down, drain the petrol tank and give it a good clean.
Regular maintenance will require you to clear out the blades. Don’t try this without removing the source of power, you don’t want to get damaged. Use a brush to remove the grass.
#4: You mow when the grass is wet
Of course, it’s not always avoidable but cutting the grass wet can cause damage. You’ll get cuttings stuck on the machine and others will clump together and end up blocking up the grass from getting air. Preferably cut in dry weather.
#5: You water your grass too much
More of a lawn care problem than a mowing one. However, ensure that you water your grass first thing in the morning or in the evening. It needs time to seep into the soil. There’s no need to water it all the time, even with a sprinkler. Your roots won’t develop deeply and will rely upon you to water it.
