Plan your approach

Although the neighbour might tell you that you need to trim around the edges of your lawn before mowing it, you might decide to do it the other way around with a mow first and then trim. However, the neighbour’s approach is actually a very good idea, as you are making clippings to be mulched by the mower when you run it across the grass. This type of mulch will deliver nutrients to the turf. Whichever way you decide to approach the cut, make a decision on it first so that you’re not swapping tools as you go.

Start with the border

Sometimes known as the collar, the border around the perimeter of the lawn should be cut first. Ensure that it’s wide enough for you to make a turn without interfering with the flower bed or any plants that are overhanging the lawn.

Set your mower deck high enough

Although some prefer a short cut, if your mower deck is too low it could scalp the lawn. This is going to spoil the look for your lawn and leave brown patches. Earlier we wrote a post about how you might even opt to leave your grass slightly longer to give your turf some protection from the sun. You could leave it up to 3½ inches high and it will shade the turf.

Take your time

Rushing around with a mower to cut your lawn can actually damage the turf. This can be particularly tough on grass that is either tall or wet. Even when the weather is dry, rushing can leave poorly cut grass, badly mulched clippings and an uneven shear.

Look ahead

It’s a fact that if you look around 10 feet ahead then you’ll get a better cut as it will be straighter.

Get healthier turf

You might want to pick up the grass clippings to prevent them from coming inside the house, but if you mulch them you’ll be naturally feeding all those nutrients back to your grass and your lawn will look great for it.

Follow these simple tips and you could have a lawn to be proud of this Summer.
