Self-propelled lawn mowers are becoming extremely popular and most manufacturers include a power driven mower in their product list. There are petrol, electric and cordless powered models to choose from and depending on what type of garden you have, a choice of single-speed or variable-speed options are available. Due to self-propelled lawn mowers being in a manufacturer’s premium range, they may come with more high-end functions such as electric start, 3 in 1 mowing functions, height adjustable and easy grip handles and minimal storage designs.
And whether you require a roller mower for creating the perfect striped lawn or a rotary mower for standard lawn cutting there will be an option to suit every budget. The mowers function works much like vehicles and uses a drive system to propel the machine forward. The mower is activated by squeezing a bail arm and as this engages the lawn mower moves forward without the need to push.
This effortless drive system not only takes the strain out of mowing the lawn, but also cuts the grass quicker. The mower will move to match the users walking pace and drive up inclines and across uneven ground with ease. Single speed models steadily mow at 2.5 mph which is suitable for most people. The average adults walking speed is approximately 3 mph, so some users may find single-speed mowers too slow.
Variable-speed mowers are a more expensive option but allow the user to choose the mowers travelling speed. Depending on the mower the variable speed is adjusted either by adding more pressure to the bail arm, a lever, or a sensor that adjusts the speed automatically as you mow. The variable speed can be a helpful addition when dealing with longer or thicker grass conditions.
As well as single-speed and variable speed options, there is also front wheel drive and rear wheel drive models. If lawns are relatively flat with trees or permanent obstacles, a front-wheel-drive mower would be a practical choice as users find it easier to turn the mower by lifting the front wheels. If gardens have inclines and rougher grass conditions then a rear wheel drive option will offer better traction whilst mowing. It is important to note that a four wheeled mower is not suitable and can be potentially dangerous when mowing up slopes. A hover mower is best suited for hilly gardens, please read our blog on ‘Mowing on a steep bank’ for more information.

This will give the user more time and energy to concentrate on other activities whilst minimises the risk of injury through exertion whilst cutting the lawn.
