How does lawn striping work?

Stripes on lawns are caused by light reflection on the blades of grass. It’s not related to how long the grass is or even the different species available, it’s all about bending the blades so that they lie flat in a particular direction. This will result in a wonderful stripe that will help your garden to look it’s best.

Whether your grass bends one way or another will determine whether your stripe is ‘dark’ or ‘light’ coloured. The blades that are bending away from you will appear to be light in colour and the ones towards you will appear to be dark. The way to increase the intensity of the colour is to bend the blade as far over and as flat as you can. This is why some cricket grounds and other establishments use lawn rollers.

Our lawn striping tip – (word has it that this is from the paddock grounds-man of Cheltenham Race Course). Mow your lawn when it’s slightly wet to increase the flatness of your lawn laying down as it will stick together more. It’s also recommended not to cut the grass to short, or it won’t bend over so far.

Another factor that will determine how far your grass will bend over is the species of grass. Some breeds are far more conducive to bending over, and will therefore produce am improved stripe pattern.

Remember that another factor that will affect the stripe is the position of the sun. At certain times of the day, the stripes will appear far more intense than at other times.

How to get basic lawn stripe patterns

To produce some basic lawn stripes, begin your mowing around the perimeter of your garden. Now mow in opposite directions across the rest of the lawn. Beware turning awkwardly at the end of each row as this could impact the condition of your turf. We recommend making your turn in a Y shape. To finish, mow around the perimeter again to clean up any unwanted effects from turning at the end of each row.

With some care and attention, you can help your lawn to look its best. Nothing beats a beautifully striped and well taken care of lawn for summer entertaining and outside living.
