January

Everyone starts the new year with good intentions and although it may be a little early to get out your lawn mowers, there is still plenty you can do to get your garden ready for the year ahead. Why not evaluate what you want to do in your garden, start planning how you’re going to do it and buy anything that you need.

February

Your lawn in February is likely to either be waterlogged or frozen and like January there is little you can do to improve your lawn at this time. It is however the perfect opportunity to assess the condition of your gardening tools. Looking after your lawn mowers will not only give you a sharp cut, which will make mowing that little bit easier but it will also extend the life of your mower. It has been known for lawn mowers to last upwards of twenty years when well maintained.

March

It’s time to rake up all of the rubbish on the surface of the grass, as it’s likely your lawn is ready for the first cut of the season. Before you get your lawn mowers out of the shed make sure the grass is dry. Then check that your lawn mowers are set to the highest cutting height as cutting off too much at this time could damage your lawn.

Over the next month increase frequency in mowing and reduce the cutting height to achieve your desired grass length.

April

Once you’ve got into your cutting routine, you will be able to tell if you have a weed a problem. The best month in the year to treat a weed problem is April, so now is a great time to start tackling those pesky weeds.

Now is also the time to cover any bare areas with grass seeds. Do not use general grass seeds if you have a lawn that was sown with a fine mix, or if you need to cover bare areas that have lots of shade. For shade covered areas consider using a specific shade seed.

May

By May mowing your lawn at least once a week is the key to a perfect lawn. Using your lawn mowers often means that your grass is cut around the same stage each time. Letting your grass grow too long before mowing will not only encourage weeds but will also weaken your grass.

If you like stripes in your lawn, May is the best time to add them and you can do this by using lawn mowers with a rear roller.

June It’s time to get your hose pipes out because as of now your lawn may need regular watering.

If you’re trying to conserve water, it’s ok to leave your grass to brown a little as long as you don’t cut the grass too short in its dry condition.

If we experience a drought, be sure to spike your lawn before watering. This will allow the water to penetrate your lawn, ensuring your grass grows healthily.

Dog owners be careful, our precious companions and their urine can ruin your grass by leaving brown scorch marks. However, even dog owners can have a perfect lawn, just ensure you water the affected area as soon as your furry friend has emptied their bladder.

July

Caring for your lawn in July is very similar to June, regular use of your lawn mowers and hosepipe will help you achieve the perfect lawn.

One thing you may start to notice is ants. Although they may not look like they have the ability to ruin your grass, don’t be fooled, ants can and will destroy your lawn if you let them. Ants use grass to hide beneath its nests which causes a number of problems. Aesthetically this will make your lawn look awful, but it will also make mowing more difficult and will help encourage weeds.

Not to fear, there is a way to stop this… If you see an anthill use a brush to scatter it all over your lawn and then use an effective ant killer.

August

With children off school and many people off work, August is the perfect month to take a holiday. For those truly dedicated to having the perfect lawn, this means finding someone to mow and water your grass whilst you are away. Make it as easy as you can for that person by making sure your lawn mowers are in an easy and accessible place and ready to go.

September September is your last chance to sow new grass seeds. It’s also the month you will start to decrease the amount of times you mow lawns and increase the height of the cut. By allowing your lawn to grow thicker it will help protect it from any future disease.

It’s also a good time to aerate your lawn. Using a tool like a garden fork you can help improve your lawns drainage and reduce compaction which will help your grass to grow.

October

By October the mowing season is close to an end and your lawn mowers and garden tools will be preparing to hibernate in sheds across the country.

But before you put your rakes away it’s time to rake up all those dead leaves and grass that will prevent sunlight and rain reaching your lawn. If there’s two things that any grass needs to grow it’s sunshine and rain. So, don’t deprive your lawn!

November

By the end of November your grass will most likely not require mowing and will stop growing for the winter. By this point your lawn will not need maintaining and can not be improved until the following spring.

But to make your future job easier, keep brushing off any leaves that fall on to your lawn.

December

Stay inside, wrap up warm and enjoy your Christmas!!
