To help you achieve the lawn you have always wanted, we have come up with a list of the 5 most common lawn care mistakes, so you can be sure to avoid them.

Mowing The Grass Too Short

The most common mowing problem people encounter is cutting their grass too low or too short. It’s important to remember the number one lawncare rule; never cut more than a third off the grass at any time. Mowing more than this will weaken the grass leaving you with an unhealthy looking lawn.

Almost all electric and petrol lawn mowers have adjustable height settings, so make sure you set it to the right length before you start mowing.

Over Watering the Grass

In the UK it’s fair to say we receive a great deal of rain. This means you won’t always need to water your garden. Some people make the mistake of continuing to use watering systems when their lawn is already soaking wet. Over watered lawns result in poor rooting and thatch accumulation. So what does this mean for your future lawn? Poor soil and future bald patches. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and only water when it is absolutely necessary.

Not Mowing Enough

The next common mistake that we find is people not mowing their lawns frequently enough. In the height of summer, true lawn enthusiasts will be seen mowing their lawns at the very least once a week (but it is more likely to be twice). Mowing frequently is paramount to your lawns health.

I know this may sound like hard work but choosing a good quality lawn mower can make all the difference. If you have a small garden an electric will do, medium sized gardens would benefit from one of the small petrol lawn mowers and the larger gardens would require one of the more powerful petrol lawn mowers or a ride on mower.

Choose the Correct Lawn Mower

It’s important to pick the right lawn mower for your garden and not just the current ‘biggest and best’ lawn mower available. Buying a lawn mower that has a huge motor when you have a tiny garden means you will never get to use the mower to its full potential.

It’s also important to note that petrol lawn mowers are heavy, (yes they are more powerful) so consider the strength of the person who will be using the mower before investing.

Using Fertilizers

Finally, our final and one of the biggest mistakes that many people make on their lawns is over using fertilizers. Some fertilizers have the strength to burn through an entire lawn when overused so be warned. Synthetic fertilizers are often the worst for your lawn but it’s important to avoid over using any fertilizer.

Avoid these lawn care mistakes and your lawn is sure to grow healthier as each year passes.
