In the first part of our lawn mowing playlist we kicked off with some very topical tunes, interspersed with classic singalong tracks which are paving the way for a great playlist to keep you entertained and motivated while you mow the lawn. You might even be tempted to get the lawn mower out of hibernation to test yours out, so let’s get cracking with the rest of the tracks.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!
This might be a good time for another comedy track, and we like Bernard Cribbins’ ‘Right Said Fred’, as it perfectly describes a chore gone sour and brings a smile to your face. Not only is it amusing, but it’s also a fun one to sing along to and it should keep you in a good mood.
Comedy artist Weird Al Yankovich mentions lawn mowers in his parody of ‘Ridin” by Chamillionaire. Titled ‘White and Nerdy’ the song parodies the excesses of hip hop music videos by showing a boring, slightly nerdy man going about his daily business, and we see him cutting the grass…
“They see me mowin’
My front lawn
I know they’re all thinking
I’m so white ‘n nerdy”
Although watching music videos on your phone while mowing the lawn is not advisable, this video is worth a watch when you have finished the job for the comedy value alone.
After all that comedy music you may want a change of pace, and ‘Lawn Mower’ by Los Straitjackets is an instrumental number with nods to the surf style of The Beach Boys and other 60’s artists. It is a good tune for the bulk of the mowing, especially with a push along mower, as the steady pace and upbeat style lends itself perfectly to maintaining a good speed up and down the lawn to achieve the ideal stripe finish. We might include this one in between other tracks to really evoke the spirit of summer, and to make a lengthier playlist for large gardens.
Staying with the Americana style, why not put on some classic country tracks? Dolly Parton’s ‘Nine To Five’ is upbeat and well known, it’s great to sing along to and works well with the theme of hard work (although hopefully you won’t be mowing the lawn from nine til five!).
For a taste of Country, Dusty Drake’s track ‘I Am The Working Man’ mentions lawn mowers and other outdoor chores, so it makes a good addition to your lawn mowing playlist especially if you have a full afternoon of garden work to get done.
A last track to keep you motivated right to the end is by French group Nous Non Plus. Their track ‘Lawnmower Boy’ is all in French, but with some throwbacks to your school days you should be able to translate the lyrics:
“ Je suis – un garcon
J’aime tondre – les gazons
Quand j’en vois un je me precipite
Il faut que je l’aie et tout de suite”
In English these lyrics will strike a chord with every man who longs to finish the grass cutting, and the uptempo music will certainly see to that:
I love mowing the lawns
When I see one I rush
I need ale and immediately”
This ode to the post-mowing beer might well be a great ending to a lawn mowing playlist, but the lyrics are double edged – pertaining to both mowing the lawn and other activities beloved of men. We’ll stick to the grass cutting meanings of this song and let the beat keep us motivated until we can sit back with a beer and look at a beautifully cut lawn.
