We have compiled a few tips on making the most of your lawn space.
1. Create a Healthy Looking Lawn
Preparation is important for a thick and luscious lawn. Gently remove weeds with a long blade or trowel making sure you remove the whole weed, roots as well. Add a little compost if the weed has left a large hole, sprinkle on some grass seed and remember to spray with water regularly to keep it moist. Scarify the lawn in Spring and Autumn to remove any moss and thatch.
Use a nitrogen-rich lawn feed, after following the instructions carefully this can be distributed with a watering can see https://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/grow-plants/how-to-give-your-lawn-a-liquid-feed/.
Using a mulching lawnmower can really benefit the condition of your lawn. The fine grass cuttings decompose quickly and lock in moisture whilst providing the grass roots with a free and nutrient-rich fertiliser.

See our blog on treating your garden in the summer season for more tips on keeping your lawn healthy in the warmer months.
2. Mow Correctly
As the mower cuts the grass it causes shock to the blade and making sure it’s done correctly avoids disease and damage to the lawn. Make sure your lawnmower blades are sharp before you begin. Cutting the grass on its lowest setting can scalp the lawn and cause unrepairable damage. This is a common cause for brown and dead patches in your lawn. In the Spring and Autumn growing months aim to take off the top 3rd of the grass blade and mow 1-2 times per week.
In the summer months it is important to keep the mower blade high and only mow when you need to, it’s likely short grass will die in the hot weather, keep the blade length as high as possible and water regularly and responsibly.
If you have a large lawn and you are short on time to maintain it correctly, it is worth investing in a larger lawnmower, definitely self-propelled and even a ride on mower if your budget allows it. Check out our blog on caring for an ornamental lawn for more advanced tips.
3. Trim and Shape the Edges
I neatly edged lawn can really make a difference to how attractive your grass and garden looks.
Open lawn edges are ones that adjoin to borders and vegetable patches. Avoid standing on them when gardening and mowing. Mow as close to the edge as you can without risking tipping, then finish the edges with a grass trimmer, edging tool or shears.
For a very sharp, manicured look that is low maintenance it is worth investing in steel lawn edging which comes in a variety of finishes and is flexible so it can be bent or shaped to match the curvature of your lawn. Closed edges are ones that border fences, patios or driveways. Sometimes closed edges are level which means you can mow up to and over them without any problem, it is worth adjusting the blade height to high to avoid any damage to the blade or lawn. Edges that are fenced or walled should be finished the same as an open edge with a trimmer, shears or edging tool.
Creating a healthy and fine-looking lawn does take some initial groundwork, but if you spend a lot of time in the garden it’s undoubtably rewarding.
