The grass cuttings used in this manner are considered to be a type of mulch. Mulch can help when it comes to reducing weeds, reducing soil compaction and retaining moisture. They’ll be no need to water your lawn quite as much, or even feed it, as the mulch will take care of that for you.

Blades of grass hold nutrients and moisture. The nutrients will be recycled into the soil. Here are our tips on how to mulch with a push lawn mower:

  • Remove the grass catcher. Your push mower is likely to have a grass catcher, but you don’t want them to be caught. If necessary you may have to detach it by releasing it from a spring loaded flap, or by removing the screws.
  • Or even buy a mower without a grass catcher. You may want to use a push mower that doesn’t have a grass catcher. Your lawn cuttings will be automatically distributed for you.
  • Get down to some serious mowing. You should find that the mower moves more freely now it doesn’t have the grass catcher attached and there is no lag dragging behind it. All grass that is cut will be added automatically to your lawn, and will go onto to improve its overall condition.

Implementing this change will help towards having a healthier lawn. You will also save energy, water and cost when it comes to the maintenance of your lawn as a result.
