Get to know your mower. It’s important to get to know how your mower works and any safety features that it offers. You can do this by starting out by reading the instructors manual and any safety tips given by the manufacturers.

Before you start to mow the lawn, be sure to remove any debris from the lawn. This might include stones, sticks or even toys that the children have left out.

When using the lawn mower, be sure to keep children and pets at a safe distance away. Ideally they will be inside the house. Remember that a fast moving blade an whisk objects into the air at up to 200 miles per hour – which is equivalent to 100 metres per second!

Wear long trousers and sturdy shoes. Keep your hands and feet away from blades when they are moving. Your clothing will offer some protection against any objects that are thrown up such as stones or other debris. You may also want to wear earplugs, it’s surprisingly easy to get ear damage and the engine of the lawn mower can be very loud.

Eye goggles will protect your eyes from the dust and dirt that will be flying around when mowing the lawn.

If your machine is a petrol mower, do be extra careful. As we all know, petrol can be explosive and it’s not hard to get a fire started when adding petrol to a mower that is still running or hot from recent use. Don’t smoke close to petrol. Always use a spout to avoid spills and take care where you store petrol.

Keep your lawn mower in a safe place where it is away from children. It’s not a toy for them to play with and you don’t want them to start it up and put themselves in danger.
