Snow clearing is exceptionally hard work and although you may be pleased with the number of calories you can burn, there is also a very real risk of physical injury that should not be overlooked. Just as with any heavy physical exercise, it’s recommended that you spend time warming up and cooling down. You’ll also need to ensure that you use the right equipment for snow clearing. This may include rock salt in addition to a suitable lightweight snow shovel.

How Physical Is Clearing Snow?

Nutrition and fitness experts estimate that clearing snow can use anywhere between 300 and 600 calories per hour. This difference will depend on your own individual weight and how much effort you put into clearing the snow.

Bending, lifting, stretching and throwing all use a lot of muscle groups. In particular, if the snowfall is heavy or the snow has compacted, then it may be even more hard work than you anticipated.

These Tips Will Keep You Safe

So not only will you need to warm up before you start undertaking snow clearance, you should also ensure that you don’t do too much at once. Fortunately, our British climate does not make it conducive for snow to hang around for too long. Just do enough to be able to drive your car out of the driveway or clear a safe path for you and others to gain access to your property. Although you won’t be getting a prize for the best job on clearing a pathway, at the other end of the scale, you don’t want to put yourself into a safety predicament by not doing it and leaving a hazard.

What Is The Right Equipment For Clearing Snow?

Using the right equipment will make all the difference. A snow shovel that is lightweight but strong will provide you with the ideal tool to move snow. If you don’t fancy all that sweating and getting hot and bothered, then invest in a snow blower.

A walk behind salt spreader is very useful for distributing rock salt once you have made a path. Using salt will prevent the ground from becoming slippery and unsafe, in particular if the temperatures stay low and ice forms.
