Here are our tips on what to do this autumn:
Moss removal – Moss likes dampness and your lawn is the perfect place for it to grow in the autumn. Although it starts off as a tiny plant, it can rapidly spread to the point where it’s overwhelming the grass. It needs to be tackled quickly to stop it from taking over. Moss can be removed by soaking with a liquid moss killer or by spreading granules. It will usually take around 14 days to turn black and die, at which point it can be removed with a rake. Any overhanging branches should also be removed to prevent there being shade on the lawn.
Thatch removal – After a summer of grass cutting, a thatch has usually built up that will need to be removed for the lawn to have good health. If it isn’t removed, the lack of air can encourage diseases to take hold in the lawn and it will also prevent the rain from penetrating properly. To remove, use a rake to scratch the surface of the lawn.
Improve drainage – Summertime means heavy traffic for lawns. All that footfall can leave them compacted and suffering from drainage problems. Now is the time to aerate your lawn by plunging in a fork or using a wheeled spiking machine. Fill the holes you make with a sandy top dressing that can be worked into the holes with a broom.
By performing these tasks you’ll be improving the health of your lawn before winter sets in. When next spring and summer arrives, you’ll have a beautiful lawn to enjoy and you’ll be glad you did it.
