Moss loves damp and shady areas and once it’s got a good foothold, it can take over your entire lawn. Although moss in itself doesn’t damage the lawn, it will indirectly take the moisture, prevent air, sunshine and rainfall reaching the roots of your lawn. This is why it’s important to treat your lawn for moss regularly so that you can ensure the long term health of it.

Here are some of our top tips on how to handle moss in your garden:

The Billy Goat PR550H 20” Power Rake can make moss removal almost effortless. Before we look at what this piece of equipment can do for your lawn, let’s look at what might be at the root cause of your moss issue. Soil that is acidic, lacking in nutrients without good aeration and drainage can all lead to the growth of moss. Add in a lack of sunlight and some dampness and your lawn will be well on the way to being very weak and undernourished. These issues need to be addressed to prevent moss from establishing itself in your lawn and spoiling your garden.

We recommend applying a moss killer in spring and in early autumn as the moss will usually spore around these times and you want to remove the plants before they do. Once you’ve added the moss killer, you can then rake out the dead moss a week or so later. Don’t rake before you apply the moss killer, or you’ll just be distributing the spores over your lawn, making matters worse.

The Billy Goat does a good job of removing thatch too. You won’t have to put the effort in as you would with a manual rake. Sprung tines will lift the moss away from the turf without causing any damage. You can even select which height you want the machine to operate at to optimise the results. Once you’ve collected the moss, you can then use it for lining hanging basket, use it as compost or even leave out for the birds to use in their nests. Your lawn will be left looking beautiful and moss free and all thanks to your Billy Goat PR550H 20in Power Rake.
