Your lawn will be loving the rising temperatures so pull your lawn mowers out of the shed, you will be needing them a lot over the next few months.
It is likely that by May you will have already used your lawn mowers a couple of times, but with the warmer weather your grass will grow at a much quicker pace. The key to any healthy lawn is to mow regularly so now is a good time to start to increase frequency.
Even though the weather is improving, there is still a chance for late frosts, so make sure you keep an eye out for this. Tender plants do not do well in cold temperatures so make sure they are adequately protected and cared for.
May is also a popular time for weeds to visit your garden, so there is no better time to apply weed killer than in the spring. This also gives you the chance to complete another round at the end of the summer, if the first round was unsuccessful. Frequent use of your lawn mowers will also help keep those annoying weeds at bay.
For those keen vegetable growers, May will be a busy month for you. Now is the time to earth up your potatoes and quickly plant any that are still remaining. It is also OK to start to harvest asparagus spears and rhubarb if you have been growing these too.
If flowers are more your thing, then now is the perfect time to plant some beautiful hanging baskets. They provide a burst of colour at eye level which can aesthetically enhance the appearance of your garden. Stuck for ideas on what to plant? Pick colourful bedding plants if you are planning to use your hanging basket for the short term and herbs and evergreens if you want a longer lasting basket.
If you are growing plants in your greenhouse make sure you remember to open the windows and doors on those lovely warmer days. Failure to do so could result in your plants overheating and nobody wants that! It is also vital that you regularly water your greenhouse. For those environmentally conscious folk, you could choose to start collecting rainwater. Rain water is perfect for keeping those plants growing in your greenhouse hydrated. It can also be used to water the rest of your garden on the dryer days.
Finally, it’s time to mow some more. Gardening novices may be surprised at the amount of times you will need to use your lawn mowers over the next few months. Be prepared, lawn mowers will become your new best friend!
