The sunshine and warmer weather have been enthusiastically received
after a cold January. We have seen an earlier start to our busy season which
usually starts in March, yet this year was well underway from the end of February.
In early spring it can feel warm, yet there is still a chance
of the odd frost so always act with caution when trimming and planting. However,
getting started early will give you more time to sit and enjoy the garden later
in the year.
We have compiled a list of Top Tools to help save time and effort with the preparation for Spring.
Mulching mower
Why mulch? When finely mulched grass cuttings are left on
the lawn, they break down to produce up to 30% of the lawns required nutrients.
This natural fertiliser helps to protect against
Summer drought and provides the best environment for the grass roots to grow. In
a nutshell, it improves lawn health and works towards a thicker, luscious-looking
lawn. Without the need to collect the grass cuttings and empty the collector, mowing will be done quicker! Using a mulching mower is best in Spring and Autumn when decomposition is
quicker.
Blast the cobwebs away with a garden blower. Yes, the blower
can be used for much more than blowing leaves off lawns and driveways. Blowers
can be used to clear off dust from garden furniture and decking. Remember that
not all leaf blowers can remove very stubborn or wet debris, but they will all save
on time and effort.
The tiller, cultivator and rotavator are usually grouped in
the same category, yet they are different in purpose and ability. Petrol tillers
and rotavators should work like a spade and fork digging and churning the soil to
make it more manageable. The bigger the plot and the denser the soil, the more
powerful machine you will need to complete the job. Cultivators are best at
prepping soil for planting, they mix the soil and compost together to provide
the best start for new plants and seedlings, they also save you time by teasing
up weeds in between rows.
Trimming hedges can be very time consuming. If
you have plenty of hedge to maintain we advise choosing a hedgetrimmer that minimises strain on the wrists and shoulders. A soft grip handle will reduce the
vibrations through your hand, whilst a hedgecutter with a rotating handle will
easily switch cutting direction with little user effort. Long reach hedge trimmer’s
allow you to maintain wide and tall hedges without the need for ladders or walkways.
Cordless shears are a handy addition to your tool
collection. They really speed up pruning maintenance of bushes and the finishing touches after hedge trimming. Most come with
a lawn edging blade for difficult to mow flower borders. The battery garden
shear is great for shaping topiary and dead heading as the season goes on.
