Warning Signs that Your Lawn Needs to Be Aerated

If you find yourself regularly looking at your lawn and wishing it looked a little better, you’re not alone. Many lawns could be thicker, they could be greener and they could definitely be less patchy. Most often these issues are caused by an issue with soil compaction or lack of grass aeration. Fortunately, it’s quite easy to solve these issues, just by aerating your lawn turf.

Poor lawn drainage

Wish Your Lawn was this Lush and Green?

The first sign that soil has become compacted is when there are pools or puddles of water, either on the lawn itself or

in the surrounding beds. Compacted soil is so tightly packed that any air or passages for the drainage of rainwater, have been filled. The water then has nowhere to go apart from to collect on the surface. The roots of the grass cannot benefit from seepage either, and then the grass is left being undernourished.

Not getting enough water can lead to root structures that are very shallow, and are likely to suffer with dehydration issues. The soil drives too fast before it can reach deeper set roots.

Compaction is not always an even affair. Sometimes just patches of the soil are compacted, with other areas being looser. Try comparing your lawn to your neighbours’ to judge whether this problem is preventing your lawn from being greener and healthier or if it’s a general localised issue. If so, you are likely to need soil aeration.

Thin turf or bare batches

If your lawn is made of only a very thin coverage of grass, then it’s likely that your turf is not retaining or absorbing enough water for the grass to flourish.

Lawn aeration, a solution to your lawn woes

Lawn aeration can also contribute to keeping weeds under control. The grass will be able to grow back stronger and thicker and therefore offer less space for weeds to take a foothold in your lawn.

Overall, the well aerated lawn will need less when it comes to maintenance time and expense.
