Let’s explore how this can be done.

Although most plants in the UK will drop their leaves in the winter period, you can always rely on grasses and evergreens to add colour. Before you make your purchase, do a little research to check that your choice of plants can survive in lower winter temperatures.

Although most flowers cannot bloom happily during winter conditions, (apart from the poinsettia which has a limited lifespan to their blooms) you can add colour to your garden through other means. Think berries. Not only is there a huge variety of colours available, you can use them to provide a pleasant backdrop or you can fill up empty spaces with these colourful plant species.

Go for colour from a holly bush or even a cranberry bush. They will both produce stunning red berries throughout the winter. In spring, you can expect to enjoy elegant white flowers. Enjoying a beautiful garden year round is dependent upon discovering plants that will deliver allure throughout the year.

Other plants for colour that can look beautiful in the garden include the Arrow Wood flower. Although it’s almost black, its dark blue colour will brighten up the winter garden. In the spring, your efforts will be rewarded with pretty white flowers. Otherwise go for Black Chokeberry or Indian Current, also known as the Coralberry.

Other tricks of the gardening trade for winter colour include adding more greenery. Winter fruits can also add more colour. Whatever you decide to plant, factor in the amount of time your choices may need for maintenance. You don’t want to get chilled tending to them.
