Cylinder mowers use several blades scissor-cutting against a fixed bottom blade, giving a much cleaner, more precise cut than a rotary mower's single spinning blade. This produces the sharp, defined stripes associated with bowling greens and formal lawns, and generally causes less stress to the grass.
